As we know, waste sent to landfill is a problem, and food waste sent to landfill is a double problem. As food waste rots it produces methane gas, which is one of the biggest contributors to global warming, this is why it is important to recycle food waste correctly.
How is food waste recycled:
Composting – involves mixing food waste with garden waste which can be used as a soil conditioner.
Anaerobic Digestion – is a process that uses microorganisms to break down food waste in an enclosed tanker. Biogas is then created from the food waste which is broken down by microorganisms. Digestate is created and sent out to farmland. Biogas is cleaned and reprocessed to power the plant.
The reasons why food waste recycle is essential:
- Reduces your waste consumption by an average of 65%, and the less food waste sent to landfill, the less emissions to the environment.
- Turns your food waste into biogas which can be used to produce heat and electricity, and manure for crop fertilizers.
- This also reduces the use of chemical fertilizers, meaning better for the environment and can improve plant growth by 50%.
- Methane is one of the most harmful greenhouse gases, it remains in the atmosphere for 25 years, so by avoiding sending food waste to landfill, this mitigates the overall methane emissions.
